Philadelphia Information

Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, is one of the ten most populous cities in the United States. Nestled on the east and west banks of the Delaware River, the beautiful city is named for its founder William Penn. The name means “Brotherly Love”.

A modern-day commercial, educational, and cultural center, the city was once the social and geographical heart of the original colonies. Benjamin Franklin played a large role in Philadelphia's early rise to prominence and it was in this city that many of the ideas, and subsequent actions, gave birth to the American Revolution and Independence. This rich history marks Philadelphia as a centerpiece of colonial times.

Philadelphia's economic sectors include biotechnology, medicine, manufacturing, oil refining, food processing, health, tourism and financial services. The city is home to the Philadelphia Stock Exchange and several Fortune 500 companies, including Comcast, Colonial Penn, CIGNA, Lincoln Financial Group, Sunoco, Boeing helicopters division, and Pep Boys. With Philadelphia's importance as a medical research center, the region supports the pharmaceutical industry and is home to GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, Wyeth, Merck, GE Healthcare, Johnson & Johnson, and Siemens Medical Solutions, to name a few. The city is also home to the nation's first school of pharmacy.

Philadelphia has the distinction of being the home of the first hospital in the colonies, as well as the first medical school, now located at the University of Pennsylvania. The university is the city's largest private employer and also runs a large teaching hospital and extensive medical system. Major hospitals are also affiliated with Temple University School of Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University, and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Philadelphia also has three distinguished children's hospitals and a Cancer Center. These make health care the largest sector of employment in the city.

The federal government has several facilities in Philadelphia. Today, the East Coast operations of the United States Mint are based near the historic district, and the Federal Reserve Bank's Philadelphia division is also based there. With the historic presence of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and a large population using public transportation, Amtrak maintains a significant presence in the city.

Philadelphia is a national center of law as the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law, Temple University Beasley School of Law, Rutgers University School of Law - Camden, Villanova University School of Law, and Widener University School of Law all have educational facilities there. The headquarters of the American Law Institute is also located in the city.
